Pulmonary Function Testing

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are safe and non-invasive breathing tests showing how well the lungs work. The tests measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. This information can assist your healthcare provider in diagnosing specific respiratory conditions and determining appropriate treatment approaches.

There are several reasons why a pulmonary function test may be necessary. If you have been experiencing shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing, a PFT can help determine if these symptoms are due to a respiratory issue. It can also be helpful in diagnosing conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally, a PFT may be required before certain surgeries or procedures to ensure that your lungs are functioning properly. Overall, a PFT can provide valuable insight into your respiratory health and help guide treatment decisions.

During a Pulmonary Function Test, the patient will perform several different breathing maneuvers while being coached by a Respiratory Therapist. The patient will be requested to breathe in and out through a mouthpiece attached to a machine that measures lung function. The test will measure the amount of air a person can breathe in and out, how much air they can forcefully exhale, and how quickly they can exhale. Your respiratory therapist will be by your side, assisting you every step of the way!

During a pulmonary function test, your therapist wants you to be comfortable! Wear non-restrictive clothing, and avoid a heavy meal just before testing. You may also be requested to withhold certain medications and refrain from smoking for the test day.

Testing should take approximately an hour to complete. Only the patient is allowed in the testing area. A Pulmonary Function Test requires your total effort and cooperation. Time is allowed to rest between maneuvers if needed. Always keep open communication with your therapist.

There are several types of pulmonary function tests that provide different insights into your lung health and function. Some of the main types include:

1. Spirometry: Measures how much air you can inhale and exhale and how quickly you can do so. This test is often used to diagnose and monitor conditions like asthma and COPD.

2. Lung Volume: Assess the total amount of air your lungs can hold, helping to detect restrictive lung diseases and evaluate lung expansion.

3. Diffusion: Measures how well your lungs transfer oxygen from inhaled air to your bloodstream, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions affecting gas exchange.
